Transforming the Design of the University of Illinois
IGW Architecture led a team of architects, landscape architects, and interpretive designers in developing a heritage master plan for the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The project grew from a desire to articulate and celebrate the proud history, tradition, and spirit of Illinois athletics.
The plan envisions a phased transformation of the existing athletic campus into a destination for students, faculty, alumni, residents, and tourists: a playful mix of interior and exterior spaces that give visitors varied ways to take part in the Illinois athletic tradition. Unifying architectural elements, landscape features, activity areas, and exhibits guide visitors intuitively through the campus.
The plan highlights the university's long-standing commitment to the development of the whole individual, and shows how sports can unite people of different ages and backgrounds around shared goals, ideals, and loyalties.
