Cunningham campus master plan

Redeveloping Cunningham Children's Home

IGW Architecture created a new campus master plan for Cunningham Children's Home, a child welfare agency in Urbana, Illinois serving children and adolescents with severe emotional and behavioral disabilities. After increasing its campus acreage, and guided by its strategic plan, the agency asked for a plan to meet future needs and build a unified, cohesive campus: a safe, nurturing, therapeutic environment where children and youth can grow personally and heal.

Cunningham took part in an interactive process: create a vision; assess program and service needs; evaluate site opportunities; explore alternative campus organizational concepts; agree on a preferred direction; and develop a master plan with phased implementation and costs. A programming effort came first, verifying and defining the critical site and building needs identified in the strategic plan.

The master plan envisions the development of a new north quad connected to the historic quad on the original campus, with several new buildings, renovations to existing buildings, and site improvements to meet current and future needs.
