Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School

Urbana School District 116, Urbana, IL

An 18,200-square-foot single-story addition with a new entrance, multi-purpose room and kitchen, gymnasium, two classrooms, and a secure outdoor learning courtyard.

The existing 44,700-square-foot building received central air conditioning, and its gym was converted to three art classrooms. Site work added a bus drive and parking.

Japanese Cultural Education Center

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

A 3,120-square-foot center developed with Professor Emeritus Jack Baker. Three tea rooms surround a traditional multi-purpose space.

Traditional tea and dry gardens complete the setting.

Leal Elementary School

Urbana School District 116, Urbana, IL

Built in 1936 as a WPA Art Deco school. A 20,000-square-foot addition adds classrooms for grades 3–5, a library-media center, cafeteria, and computer lab.

The existing 45,800-square-foot building was fully renovated and made accessible with new ramps and an elevator, and its original materials and systems were restored.

Office of Admissions and Records

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

A four-story, 33,000-square-foot office building serving about 120 staff and the undergraduate students they assist, which also houses a publications distribution center.

The building anchors the new east campus entrance alongside the Hallene Gateway, Alice Campbell Alumni Center, and Spurlock Museum.

Parkland College Fine and Applied Arts

Parkland College, Champaign, IL

IGW led the architects, engineers, and consultants for a single-story visual arts addition with eight studios and a three-story performing arts addition.

The performing arts addition holds a 2,000-square-foot black box theater and a lobby shared by both wings.

Parkland Student Union

Parkland College, Champaign, IL

IGW was associate architect with Perkins+Will Chicago for this 108,000-square-foot student union, which consolidates student and administrative services and adapts the original 1950s-era "educational village" concept by Ernest J. Kump & Associates.

A glass-walled entry pavilion marks the building, which is designed to achieve a minimum of LEED Silver certification.

Urbana Early Childhood School

Urbana School District 116, Urbana, IL

A 41,000-square-foot single-story school for pre-K students ages 3–5, including special education, replacing a turn-of-the-century schoolhouse. Classrooms are organized in three four-classroom "villages", with room planned for two more.

The school connects to Prairie Elementary through a 13,400-square-foot addition and features daylighting, ground-source heating and cooling, and a canopied bus drop-off.

Urbana Middle School

Urbana School District 116, Urbana, IL

Expansion and renovation of a 1950s junior high building following a successful referendum. The 50,000-square-foot addition holds the main entrance, offices, cafetorium, music, art, industrial arts, and family and consumer sciences classrooms.

The 144,000-square-foot building was fully renovated, phased over two years so the school stayed occupied throughout.
